Creating a shot against an opponent requires spontaneity and quickness. Having a favourite ‘trademark’ move is fine, and works for many players. However, unless you have a wide range of moves, and the ability to move quickly off of both pivot feet, all too soon you will be scouted and your tools will be taken away from you. Like the shot fake but prefer to drive? You won’t get your defender jumping. Is a 15 foot shot from the base line your spot? You’re going to be forced to drive middle all game. Basketball shooting drills involving creating moves, not just replicating them, promotes the spontaneity needed to avoid habits and become more difficult to guard.
This basketball workout can be done with one to ten players. More players means more congestion which is actually a good thing, since it can force players to pull up for a jump shot if someone gets in their way.
1. Put chairs at either wings and the top of the 3 point line so that you have three chairs.
2. Start at the halfway line with a ball.
3. Dribble towards the chair and make one move when you reach it. This can be a hesitation, crossover, inside out, spin, through the legs – anything.
4. After the move, attack the basket hard for either a lay up or a pull up jump shot.
5. Grab your rebound and hustle back to the halfway line to go again at a different chair.
6. Repeat the above shooting drill but make it two moves, then three.
This basketball workout can be adapted for post players as well. Starting at the block with back to the basket and a chair behind, make one, two or three moves and score.
